Senate Enrolled Act 267 concerning mental health was signed into law on May 7, 2013. Throughout the bill, the term “pervasive developmental disorder” has been replaced with “autism spectrum disorder,” which includes Asperger’s Syndrome. This change adds autism spectrum disorder to the birth problems registry maintained by the Indiana State Department of Health, if diagnosed before the child is five (5) years of age.
SEA 267 also deletes “managed care provider” throughout, to be replaced by “community mental health center” as the gatekeeper and coordinator for services and admission to certain facilities.
During the 2013 legislative interim, the Commission on Mental Health and Addiction is to review revisions and recommendations for the continued implementation of the children’s social, emotional, and behavioral health plan, as developed under IC 20-19-5. The Commission shall also review existing mental health crisis intervention teams and make recommendations to encourage the creation and development of such teams.
