Trauma Exposed Youth — Tips for Legal Advocates

Exposure to trauma is becoming a key focus of the Indiana Department of Child Services, and that focus can impact funding for services in both CHINS and delinquency cases.  Many grapple with the research and how trauma screenings and assessments fit into the disposition by the juvenile court.  A useful place to start is the Safe Start Center, with documents supported by American Bar Association, Child & Family Policy Associates, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.  See also the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.  Useful documents include:
