Sometimes You Need to Take a Moment

Working in the juvenile justice arena can be very stressful no matter what the role, and sometimes you need to take a moment to ward off compassion fatigue or secondary trauma.  One possible strategy is to take an online class through the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) Mindful Awareness Research Center.  The Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) I for Daily Living “lays the foundation for a daily meditation practice and provides insights into the art, science, and practice of mindfulness.”  MAPs II: Finding Happiness teaches “how to cultivate loving kindness, compassion, equanimity, joy, gratitude, and forgiveness.”  There are also free guided meditations and free weekly mediation podcasts at UCLA’s Hammer Museum.

For more information about compassion fatigue and secondary trauma, see this previous post.
