The Campaign Against Indiscriminate Juvenile Shackling (CAIJS), led by David Shapiro, continues to increase their resources for those who are seeking to end shackling during all juvenile hearings. The movement aims to put juveniles in the same position as adults, who already have the right, generally, to appear at trials without shackles or other restraints. The proposed statutes, including those submitted in Indiana for consideration by legislators, would presume that children should be unshackled, unless the court makes a specific finding as to a specific child to protect the child or others. CAIJS resources include:
- Model statutes
- A fact sheet
- A Twitter account — @EndShackling
- A list serve about developments and new coverage — Contact David to get on the list.
