For those who are interested in the disparity of access to services between urban centers and rural communities, the Rural Health Research Gateway provides access to research and webinars on a wide variety of topics, including substance abuse, children, mental health.
Publications of interest include:
- Patterns of Care for Rural and Urban Children with Mental Health Problems (June 2013), which found that “rural children were significantly less likely to be diagnosed and treated for non-ADHD mental health problems than urban children and…less likely to receive mental health counseling.”
- Availability, Characteristics, and Role of Detoxification Services in Rural Areas (December 2009), which found that “82% of rural residents live in a county without a detox provider. More than half of all rural detox providers serve patients across a 100 mile radius, making travel distances a barrier to outpatient care.”
- The 2014 Update of the Rural-Urban Chartbook (October 2014), which analyzes “current trends and disparities in urban and rural health.”
